Underneath the Mistletoe........A Novella
Feb. 7th, 2023 01:17 pmChristmas Eve,2024...
" Seven years is a long time to be alone." You say,as you wrap your strong arms around my waist, leaning down to kiss my neck and bury your face in my hair, breathing deeply. "You are every bit your namesake, a treasure, locked away and wary of whom holds the key."
"Very assute. Yet, you, were well worth the risk. I can't say that I am not frightened, nor can I say I'm not. I am influx of emotions at present, but the one thing that remains still,is you. You are like the rock that a wave breaks against. You have shown me such patience. It took me a spell to come around, but you waited for me to see you."
"Your essence, your light, your curious nature and adventurous spirit were a beacon to me. In you,I have found home and can not have asked for a better partner."
You finish, turning me around and looking deep into my eyes.
"I've never met someone like you. You are everything I needed and didn't realize. Not many guys are just as adventurous and love a good novel. You are just as rare and amazing. Such a kind spirit, always up for something new. A deep thinker and loves a good conversation. Thank you,for choosing me." I say,my eyes misting over,as I look at you.
You laugh deeply,a soulful laugh, with a smile that reaches your eyes. You touch my hair and laugh a little to yourself.
"Do you remember the day we met?" You ask, your silky baritone running shivers down my spine. I smile.
"How could I forget?" You wait, in anticipation. " I was all by my lonesome, walking through the culture village, looking at art. You were with some friends and family and you stopped to look at the same piece of artwork as I. After we looked at it for a while, I turned to leave and crashed right into you..."
FLASHBACK....Mid-May 2023...
WHAM!!!!
"Oh God! I am so sorry!" I say, panicked as
The huge green tea slushy splashed onto his tan and forest green sweater. "Here! I have some napkins!" I say and start to dabble at the guys sweater. Suddenly realizing what I am doing,I pull away abruptly and am met with the most intense pair of deep hazel golden-brown eyes. Obviously contacts, right? Hmm... " Sorry...AGAIN. Man,I am two for two aren't I? Here is some money to replace your slushy. I am sorry again!" I say and make a hasty exit. " Damn,he sure was handsome." I thought. I stop at another painting, leagues away from "Mr. Slushy" and am in awe at the colors, design and technique. Its as if by looking at this painting,I've been transported to another world, another plane of existence. As I continue marveling at the beautiful artwork,a rich baritone fills my ear.
"Looks gorgeous, although,I think you may outshine this art anyday." I turn and find "Mr. Slushy" smiling at me,his friends milling about the different stands and exhibits.
"Thank...you?" I say with a bit of trepidation. I have never been good with complements. They were always followed by an insult of sorts. Sigh. Guess some demons are harder to leave than others. Still embarassed from our first encounter,I nod my head and smile slightly, practically running from him. Gods, this guy's essence. I want to wrap myself in it,and that is what scares me the most. I make my way to a food stand and purchase some spring rolls and chicken curry, with extra rice and a hot green tea. I sit in a semi-secluded area to people watch while eating. I devour my food, starving, due to my insane idea to skip breakfast in my haste. I pull out my latest read, "A Tale of Two Cities," By Charles Dickens. A classic, and a favorite of mine. Enraptured by my book, fifteen minutes fly by,while unbeknownst to me,I have caught someone's eye....
Mitsunori's POV: UGGHH, at last! As much as I love my family and friends, after a while it becomes a bit much and I start to get antsy. I've purchased several paintings, and dropped them back at my place, then returned here to the culture village. For some reason,I had to see if she was still here. Its as if a force beyond my control has brought me back here and I will be damned if I want it to stop. She was STUNNING. Deep, dark brown eyes, almond brown skin,a dark fluff of hair, with some silver shining in the early morning light. Toned and blessed with a figure I would LOVE to caress and hold tight to me. A silky caressing voice, that held me captive and...fox ears? Well, she deifnitely had it right. She is definitely a FOX, and I am the big bad wolf... After looking around at more art,I see her sitting somewhat alone, and I see my window of opportunity. After giving myself a pep talk, I walk over to her...
My POV: He must've stood there for a good five minutes before I noticed. I look up for a second and there is "Mr.Slushy" for the third time today. "May I sit down?" He asks.
"Uh,sure,go right ahead." I said, trying to remain calm. I finish my food and close my book, getting ready to leave. As I begin to stand,he does as well.
"I am scaring you,aren't I?"
"Yes,you are."
"That wasn't my intention. I just...wanted...to talk...to you." He said, slightly nervous. "Please don't be afraid of me. I mean you no harm."
"A bit hard for me to believe, after seeing you three times today." I see his crest fallen face, and my heart melts a little.
"You have been hurt, repeatedly, and you do not trust easily. Its in your eyes."
"Yes,I have, its been very hard to open up to people, but you seem different."
"I am not like others. I would never hurt you." He stretches out his hand. "Dare to come with me? It is fun when you aren't alone." I stare at his outstretched hand, hesitantly. I look into his eyes.
"Perhaps we ought to introduce ourselves first?" I said, still staring into his eyes. He smiled.
"That is fine by me. I'm Mitsunori Akutagawa. Nori for short. Whom do I have the please of speaking to?" He said, staring just as deep into my eyes.
"Nori...that sounds better than "Mr. Slushy. Which is what I nicknamed you after our first encounter. " I said,a smile breaking across my face.
"Mr. Slushy? Is that all?" He said and we burst into laughter. After regaining our composure, I introduce myself.
"I'm Toccarra Nelson. You can call me Carra for short." I shake his outstretched hand, smiling at him."Nice to meet you." I finish.
"Nice to meet you too." He said, still holding my hand and gently massaging it. "My family and friends have left, would you care to join me? There is still so much I would like to see. " He said. I,still hesitant, look down at our joined hands. "I will not hurt you,you have my word. Lets walk and talk, maybe that will help you feel better?" He suggested, seeing the aray of emotions crossing my face.
After thinking about it for the better part of a minute' I relented and grasped his hand a little tighter.
"You're right. What do I have to lose?" I said and he and I started towards the next art exhibit. What do I have to lose? "My heart." I whispered to myself.
"Did you say something?" Nori asked, looking at me.
"Nothing at all." I say and smile. I notice the portrait in front of us. "This is very beautiful. The colors go well with each other and the vibe it gives off is amazing." The picture was of a couple having a picnic near a lake on an early afternoon. The lake had waterlillies and lilypads on them, the water crystal clear, and the couple engaging in conversation.
"I have to agree. Would you like to buy it?It clearly speaks to you." Nori said, waiting for my response.
"Maybe. Let's look at some other artwork and then I will decide. How about yourself? Did you find anything you liked at all?" I asked.
"Several, actually. I dropped them off at my place and came back for one more..." He said gazing deep into my eyes.
"Which one would that be?" I asked, softly. He smiled and gestured to another stand. He couldn't have come back here for me...could he?
Taking my hand back into his,we looked at other portraits and crafts. What followed was one of the best days I have ever had,and months of a beautiful friendship and a deep respect of one another that blossomed into love unlike anything I have ever known...
PRESENT DAY: "To think,it all started with a slushy." I said and we laughed together. "These past few months have been the best of my life. Once I was all about work, and I changed my outlook on my life and started to have more fun. Then you can along, and life became that much sweeter and more fun than I could hope to imagine. Yes,we have our disagreements, but they are very few. I love how we are always in sync." I say smiling.
Nori nodded. "You were something special from the moment I laid eyes on you. All I knew is that I wanted to protect you,be there for you,be what you needed. We had barely spoken, but I knew,in my very being that you were it." He kissed my neck and inhaled deeply. "You mean so much to me. I love you." He said, his voice cracking.
"I love you too." I said, deeply moved by his sincerity, his love for me. I turned to him, love for him reflecting in my eyes. Nori's arms encircle my waist and he pulls me closer. Stroking a piece of my hair,he asks me:
"Do you remember when I asked you out?" He asks. A soft jazz song begins to play. I smiled and nodded, wrapping my arms around him, swaying slowly back and forth.
"Its one of the sweetest memories of us that I treasure the most."
FLASHBACK...New Year's Eve 2023...
Nori's POV: I have been a basket case all week. These feeling that I have for Carra are more than just friendship...more than just caring...I'm....I love her. Since discovering this, things have been a little awkward. Carra seems to be fine, but I know she noticed. I want to do this right, but I am afraid to lose the best thing that has happened to me if she says no. WAIT...what the hell am I thinking? Each time she looks into my eyes, I can see into her very being. I KNOW she loves me too,I just want us to be happy, together. Now,how do I do this? I start thinking and come up blank.
"C'mon, Nori. This is the most important decision of your life. How do you ask your best friend to take the next step?" Nori thinks a bit more and an idea surfaces. Nori smiles. Nothing beats the classics. He looks at his watch. Nine thirty a.m. it reads. "Damn,I am going to be late!" I exclaim. Carra and I have reservations for breakfast at Trifolio Hills Bakery and Cafe, one of our favorite spots at ten fifteen. Just as I am pulling on my coat,Carra voice messages me.
"Good morning Nori! I am just pulling into the parking lot of Trifolio Hills. Thank goodness I arrived early. I think today may be a full house. See you when you get here hon! Bye."
I smile and finish putting on my coat. "Breakfast is a good way to start the day. Today's breakfast may be more special than others." I say to myself as I lock up and walk to my car.
Fifteen minutes later I pull into the last available spot, ironically, next to Carra's car. She wasn't kidding about the crowd. Who would've thought that New Year's Eve would draw such a crowd? I park and shut off the car. I step out the car, closing the door and look up into the windows of the cafe. I can't see her from here. I check my watch. Ten oh two am. Thirteen minutes early. I look around and finally spot Carra, waiting patiently in a corner to be seated. I walk towards her,as she looks up,and our eyes lock. Gods,it's like there is no one else in the room when I look at her. She smiles at me,and I walk a bit faster to her. She stands up and meets me halfway.
"Nori!" she exclaims, and pulls me into a tight hug. I smile as we embrace each other. No matter that we just saw each other yesterday, she treats me like its the first time she sees me,every day. It means a lot to see her eyes light up when she sees me. Now,after I ask her,I hope to make that sparkle stay permanently in her eyes;I think to myself as we link arms and walk towards our table.
My POV: I park my car and check my watch. Its nine-thirty a.m.. I call Nori and leave him a message. I exit my car and walk inside the cafe. I speak with the waitress and have a seat in the waiting area. Smoothing down my dress,I start to think about my and Nori's friendship. I never thought I could meet someone so wonderful and we just...clicked. Being in his company is as easy as breathing. Yet,for the past few months,my feelings have...changed. I look forward to when he calls. His smile, makes my heart melt. Its as if everyone is non existant when he is around. When he hugs me I don't ever want him to let go. I...i'm...I'm in love with him. Its been hard to not ask him for more. I do not want to ruin a good thing. His friendship means the world to me. Also,I have noticed a change in Nori. I have caught him sneaking glances at me when he thought I wasn't looking. The longing in his eyes...I may not be the only one ready for more. I look up,and like magic, there he is,walking towards me,smiling. I catch my breath. Maybe destiny has smiled on us. Now,how do I ask...to be more than friends?
"Morning Carra. Are you ready?" Nori asked.
"Good morning Nori. Yes,i'm ready." I reply as we link arms and walk towards our table. Breakfast goes smoothly, despite the busy cafe setting. Nori had steak and eggs with hot tea, while I ate mixed berry waffles with turkey sausage and hot tea. The conversation flowed easily as always between us,but several times,he paused as if he wanted to say something, then stops abruptly and changes the subject. Odd... Just before we leave,he graps my hands and turns me towards him.
" Carra, there's something I want to ask you." He said, suddenly nervous. I begin to rub his forearm.
"Nori, whatever it is,we can handle it together." He smiles.
"I love how you are always there for me. You are truly amazing and I am blessed to have you in my life. Lately,I've...I.." He swallows, nervously. Then he takes a deep breath. "Carra,I have been thinking and I-" Suddenly a loud crash at the main entrance is heard as a waitress drops a tray of dishes. She hurriedly picks them up,grabbing a broom for the broken glass. Not long after, a huge group of college students pour in,cranking the noise up in the cafe. Nori looks a bit disappointed,I can tell there was something he wanted to say, but we can't hear each other think. He says loudly:
" I will talk to you about it later. Ready to go hon? Do you have everything?" I stand and check around.
"Yes,I have everything. Do you?" I reply loudly. He nods.
"Okay then. Let's go! He says putting his hand at the small of my back after checking once more and bidding the hostess goodbye,we cruise out the doors. Once outside,we walked to our cars,I smile as I see we are parked side by side. Score two for destiny. He sees me to my car,I unlock it and he opens my door for me. I slide behind the wheel and get settled. Nori then closes the door and looks at me through the window. He reaches in,stroking my cheek. Again,I can tell something is on his mind, but I am not sure what. So I ask.
"Nori? Is everything okay? Are things okay with us?" I ask. He looks deep into my eyes.
"Everything is fine,Carra. Sorry to have worried you." He said, softly
"Are you sure? I don't like leaving you like this. " I say concerned, reaching out and stroking his forearm,he murmurs softly, content.
"I'm sure,anata...I will see you for dinner later. My family is happy that you are joining us for the new year cookout." Nori said, changing the subject. I stare at him for a while. Then I smile.
"There is nowhere else I would rather be." I check my watch. It reads eleven fifteen a.m.. " Nori, I have to head to my studio now and finish some work. More than likely,I will be busy up until early evening. Still, call me if you want to chat. It was very noisy in there." We laughed and I stroke his cheek. "See you later,Nori!" I said and started my car as he backed up and walked to his car. He waved once more as I drove away. Still smiling big as usual due to him,a memory stirs...my Japanese may be rusty, but didn't he just call me,anata? Anata meant "dear" in the romantic sense. Maybe It was nothing, but that didn't stop my heart from doing a little jump for joy. I arrive home and pull into the driveway. As I tap the garage door opener,my cell vibrates. I pull into my garage, park and turn off the car. Stepping out of my car, I pull out my phone and check my messages. One from my client and the other from Nori. I check in with my client and checked the message from Nori:
" Hey Carra! Just checking to make sure you made it home safely. Can't wait to ring in the New Year with you. Btw,I was thinking that since it will be late, and I don't want you to drive alone,I will come and pick you up,if that's okay? Let me know. Talk to you soon!" I smile as I sit at my desk and type out my response.
"Hi Nori! Thanks for you message. I made it home safely and am in my studio. I hadn't thought about the late hour,so I am fine with you picking me up. I can't wait to ring in the New Year with you too. See you soon Nori!" Seconds later,he messages back.
"I am glad you made it home safely. I will be there around seven forty-five,eight at the latest. See you then. Can't wait!" I smile and sit down at my desk. Its eleven forty-five, so I have plenty of time to get ready. Not soon after,I am buried in projects. My eyes start to glaze over. It's three pm now. I save everything on the computer and head to my room. I change out of my dress and into my pajamas and crawl into bed for a nap. I wake up at six thirty and head for the shower.
Nori's POV: After seeing Carra drive away,I get into my car and drive home. I can't believe I slipped up and called her "anata" Maybe she didn't notice...or thought that it was a mistake. She knows some Japanese and is improving daily. I smile. She is something. So, breakfast didn't go as planned, due to all the noise. Which stinks, but it couldn't be helped. My phone buzzes. It's Carra responding. I reply to her text and head to bed, wanting to clear my head and be well rested for the party tonight. I wake up at six and head to the shower. My heart full of hope and excitement. At seven I am on my way to her place. Knowing Carra, she is finishing up getting ready. I pull into her driveway at seven twenty-five. I am a bite early, but that should be fine. I park and turn off my car. I sit in the car for a moment, regaining my composure. I am nervous, yet excited to spend the new year with Carra. New Year's Blessings, work your magic. "Please, let me wrap my arms around her at midnight,no longer just my best friend, but as the love of my life." I asked the Gods. Taking a deep breath,I exit my car and walk up to the door, and ring her bell. Let's do this.
My POV: I hear the doorbell and check my watch. Seven thirty-five pm. I smirk. That's Nori for you. Early as always. Luckily, I am almost finished. Just add shoes and done! I grab my purse and coast down the stairs to the front door and open it to see Nori,as handsome as ever in his dark grey suit. His hair loose and just touching his shoulders. He looks like he just stepped off a fashion magazine. I look down at my dress. I chose it because it spoke to me and reminded me of New Year's. Its black, with golden flecks strewn about it. I topped it off with a pair of gold colored sandals and my gold and black purse.
"You look wonderful. Like fireworks in the night sky." He said, fully taking me in. I smiled.
"That is exactly what I was going for. Thank you for the complement." I say and step over the threshold and turn to lock my door. After doing so, I turn back to him. He was so close that we bumped into each other. He wraps his arms around me and pulls me even closer. Gods...he is so close...I look up into his eyes and we stand there lost within each other. He leans down towards my lips,my eyes automatically closing. Just a breath away,he whispers:
"I think...we should go." He pulls back, his breathing heavy, with fire in his eyes. What the hell was that? My chest starts rising and falling faster. Why did he...stop? I take a couple of deep breaths, slowly regaining my composure and see his outstretched hand. My hand slide into his and I couldn't help but confront him.
"Nori...what was that just now? What has been going on between us these past few weeks? What aren't you saying? We tell each other everything!" Nori turned to open the passenger door and gestered for me to get in. He takes my hand in his, inhaling my scent. He crouches down, fastening my seatbelt, before he looks into my eyes. The fire is still blazing within them.
"Nature taking it's course." He replied. I shake my head.
"No. I am not letting you off that easy-"I began.
"CARRA." He says firmly. He never gets this stern with me. He immediately appologizes. "I'm sorry. I need to talk with you later. This can't continue this way. " He says. I nod my head.
"Yes, You're right. No,it can't. " I confirm. He nods, closes the door and walks around to the driver's side. He gets himself settled, while I am a war of emotions. I think, out of respect,he backed up because he didn't have permission. Yet...I wouldn't have minded. He ignites something within me,and it only has grown stronger as time passes. I wanted him to kiss me and never stop,it's official,I have fallen in love with my best friend.
Nori's POV: The phrase, "tripped at the finish line" has been stuck in my head as we make the drive to my house. I wanted to kiss her,BADLY,but she deserves MORE than being kissed in her driveway. I want her to have the romance she talks about, the fireworks, the passion that we always talk about. Not be mauled at her door by someone acting like a teenager. I want to do this right. Then, I will kiss her unlike she has ever been kissed before. I don't sense that she is angry,just...confused,conflicted and maybe,a little hurt. DAMN IT ALL! I don't want to hurt her! I will ask her tonight. Soon,we were talking and laughing like always and the tension disappeared. Not long after,we pull into my driveway. I park, turn off the car and exited as Carra removed her seatbelt and grabbed her purse. I walk over to her side and open the passenger door, and help her out of the car. It has started to get dark already, which made me happy that we met up earlier. She grasped my hand and looked at the final rays of the sunset, marveling in their beauty. After the last rays disappear,we head into my place. Shucking our shoes at the door,Carra and I are instantly swept up in greetings and hugs from my family. My little cousins love her and she is wearing a huge smile on her face as she hugs and greets everyone of them, pecking them on the cheek. The kids run off and we find my parents by the fireplace, with my grand parents. We bow,to show our respect, and converse with them before heading to the dining room for dinner. It was eight thirty by that point, and everyone settled down at the tables we had set up. Dad says a blessing for a new year and a prayers for everyone. After that,we all dug in and talked, laughter ringing out throughout the house. Carra went with Mom to look at some of the flowers she had set up around the house. Dad approached me and set his arm on my shoulder.
"Hi Dad. You and mom did and amazing job, with my house. The decorations are amazing and goes well with the art on my walls." Dad nodded. I knew then that I was about to get grilled.
"Thank your Mom. She is more savvy with that than I. I just followed directions." We laughed. Mom was awesome and very passionate about decorating. She is a highly sought after interior designer. "So...have you asked Carra out yet? You two are in love. Everyone knows it." I smile to myself, feeling blessed. Dad couldn't be anymore blunt, could he? I look at him and reply:
"Tonight,I will ask her. I hope she says yes."
"SON, her love for you shines when you are and aren't together. Its like you two home in on each other and no one else exists. I can go on and on,but I have been there. Your mother is my best friend, and I married her a few years after we met. I just want you both to be happy." Dad finished.
"I love her so much,Dad. The way she is with mom and you, with my grandparents. Her trust and faith in me. She is always on my side, always there. She is more than just my best friend." I say, love for her shining in my eyes. Mom rejoins us and Carra is talking with my grandparents.
"Then that is all you need." Mom says. "When the time comes, you have our blessing."
"You both honor us. Although taking her hand will come later,I will just focus on the now. Thank you both for everything." I say and bow to my parents. I turn and head to Carra's side. Sliding my arm around her waist,I bow to my grandparents. I check my watch. Its ten thirty already? Whoa. I lean into her and whisper into her ear:
"I need to talk to you." The moment had finally arrived. She nodded and headed with me to my room. I shut the door behind us and head to my bed. We both sit down.
"Carra, you are my best friend. It feels like we have known each other forever. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you.Your beauty, your strength, your mind, your heart, your spirit. I could go on and on,but its you. I am so glad to have you in my life. You are always by my side, You always have my back. I can talk to you about everything and nothing. Everyday is a adventure with you and I never want to stop. Pulling away from you earlier was the hardest thing to do. I won't kiss you without permission. I respect you too much to do that."
"Nori...you didn't have to stop.I wondered why you pulled away. I understand that you respect me and I am more than appreciative for that. Yet,how I feel about you,I can't deny it anymore. You are the first person I think of when I wake up,the one who can cheer me up instantly. You are always by my side and I love all of our adventures together. They way you smile and how your smile reaches your eyes. The way that you welcomed me into your world. You listen and value my input. I am so lucky to have you in my life." I said and take Nori's hands into mine. I take a deep breath before continuing. "The problem is Nori,I can't continue being just friends. I love you too much." I said, feeling better having confessed my feelings, but scared to hear his response. Nori and I get lost in each others eyes and I wait. Nori looks astonished, and remains silent. Oh no...I think I made a mistake. Just then, his mom knocks on his door.
"NORI! CARRA! It's time to head down to the park for the fireworks!" She called to us through the door.
"Okay! We will be there in a moment." Nori says, not breaking eye contact with me. The room falls silent again,my heart breaking every second. Finally I stood up.
"I think...I better go. I can call a taxi. Give your family my blessings for a new year." I say, tears obscuring my vision. I pull my hand from his and walk shakily to the door, when Nori bellows:
"NO!" Suddenly,Nori is behind me and scoops me up into his arms, carrying me down to the beach. We stop just a few feet away from his family. He looks at me and begins to speak:
Nori's POV: SILENCE. Sheer silence was the response my best friend was greeted with when she confessed her feelings for me. Damn,I will NOT bungle this again. She is too important to me. Seeing her walk away from me in tears snapped me out of it. I never wanted that sparkle to fade from her eyes and damn if I didn't dim it somewhat. Man,I am a dimwit. I look down at her in my arms and speak. "Don't ever walk away from me again...EVER. My heart can't take seeing that. I was astonished beyond belief that you confessed exactly what I feel for you inside. Everyday,I wake up happier than the day before because I know that I am going to see you. You make me laugh so hard and your smile can turn even the hardest moments around. The way you move, the way that you are always there, ready to listen or help. Your hugs when life is too much to handle, your eyes sparkle when you see me and I love how everyday you see me is like the first time. I love how you react to my surprises and your love of me and my family. I love you,Toccarra, nothing will ever change that. I am sorry that I ever made you doubt for a second. I love you." Unbeknownst to us,my parents and grand parents nodded in approval. I set Carra's feet on the ground and she turns to hug me,crying tears of joy. I hold her tightly as we enter the final countdown. We walk over to everyone and join them. As they count down,I turn and as my best friend. " Carra...will you be my girlfriend? I can't imagine a world without you in it." She makes my year with one word:
Carra's POV : "Yes. Life with you is all I want." I say. Nori leans down and I lean up and we kiss for the first time as a couple, as the New Years fireworks explode around us. We like to think that the world has celebrated us coming together. We break the kiss and smile at each other.
"Happy New Year Nori."
"Happy New Year Carra." We kiss again, the fireworks a backdrop to our love story.
PRESENT DAY: "I bungled that up so bad",he says, laughing at himself. I pat his arms lovingly.
"In my heart,I understood what you meant. I am glad that we are together. Everyday has been even more amazing since then. I am so blessed to have you in my life. I love you doesn' t cover how much you mean to me. " I say. Nori nodded.
" There are no words to describe how I feel. If there is a phrase above I love you, thar wouldn't even match how I feel. You are everything to me,my love. Everything." Nori dips his head and kisses me. I kiss him back just as deeply. The song ends and he leads me to the balcony, where he has dinner preppared from our favorite eatery, Trifolio Bakery and Cafe. I smile. That place holds so many memories of us. He sits me down and we eat together, having so much fun and enjoying each others company. Suddenly, Nori's phone pings. He smiles at me.
" I have an early gift for you. Meet me back in the living room,my love." He says.
"Sure. Let me close the boxes up and we can finish eating afterwards. "
" Sounds like a plan." He says and heads for the door. I close our boxes, wash my hands and join him a few minutes later. I find him sitting on the sofa. I join him and he grasps my hands.
"I can never say enough how much I love you and how I am grateful to you. You are my light,my hope and my miracle all in one. You mean the world to me,anata. " He hands me a teddy bear with a bouquet of antique french roses,my favorite. I smile, feeling tears welling up. I look down to see Nori down on one knee with a teddy bear shaped ring box. My heart leaps into my throat. Nori smiles at me and opens the ring box to the most beautiful engagement ring I have ever seen. Silver and rose gold swirled together with a large amethyst in the middle with ruby, emerald, sapphire and topaz accents. A artsy Yuletide ring. "How lovely, but not more than you, Nori. " I said. He smiled.
"Toccarra Nelson, will you marry me?" Nori asks. I smile through my tears.
"Yes,Nori. I will." He smiles and slides the ring on my finger. We rise together and kiss. I happen to look up,and we are directly under the mistletoe. " Mistletoe really is magical after all." I say, happiness within my voice Nori and I laugh and kiss once more.
~~The End
